High Performance Hempcrete Home
Our client’s vision was to create a hermitage in the country as a space for quiet contemplation while being mindful of the environment every step of the way. We built this 1000 sqft refuge with highly insulative hempcrete walls, passive solar window design, and finished throughout with hand applied clay and lime finishes.

Hand Sculpted Hempcrete Addition
Small business owners envisioned a beautiful new combination workspace / entertaining space built with all natural materials. This two storey cast-in-place hempcrete addition has a 40 ft curved wall that spirals according to the Fibonnaci sequence. Lime and clay plasters for the interior and exterior wall finishes and clay flooring complete the natural palette for the project. Every square inch of the space is literally sculpted by hand.

Timber Framed Outdoor Kitchen
A personal project by a well known local designer was realized by Elm using traditional timber framing techniques. Reclaimed brick, cedar cladding, and recycled windows blend with the 100 year old log cabin on the site. Roll up shutters facilitate seasonal shutdown and provide a level of bear-proofing to the space.

Creating an off-grid refuge
This solar powered hempcrete tiny home is built with Manitoba hemp, and finished with lime plasters mixed using local sands. The earthen floor material was dug on site and the windows and doors are all reclaimed from previous projects. Truly an example of a sustainable home right from the ground up.

New owners of this river front property wanted to make the most of their beautiful back yard. A large timber framed gazebo, cob pizza oven, massive laser cut steel privacy screens, and cedar pergola add to the hot tub and cedar/stone patio to extend the living space right out to the river bank.

A century old porch gets a much needed lift
A familiar site in the neighbourhood, this sagging front porch was re-levelled and supported. The windows were replaced and the upper deck was restored with cedar throughout. Drainage details were improved to give this structure another century of life.

Seamless white Tadelakt, custom solid wood cabinet, and new fixtures bring new light and space to this small bathroom.
A leaky shower window, poor interior flashing details, and impermeable tub surround material combined to produce a severely damaged and mouldy exterior wall. After stripping the wall board and replacing the mould affected framing, sheathing and insulation, a tadelakt tub surround surface was installed over cement board backer. The polished lime plaster surface is waterproof and naturally mould inhibiting due to the high pH of lime. The new window was flashed to the interior as well as the exterior, and the tadelakt was seamlessly integrated into the flared window jambs and sill which shed water and allow more light into the small space.
